Aey Auto, a House wife develops app for women

Sheeba Nechiyil, a 24-year-old housewife, will have a story to tell her three-month-old son Dev Narayan when he is of the age to listen to stories. A story that he is likely to find as engaging as any fairy tale she may have in store for him.

A B.Tech graduate in computer science, Sheeba is the brain behind “Aey Auto,” an Android-based mobile app listing contact numbers of autorickshaw operators across the State. It was not out of amusement that she started working on the app during the latter stages of her pregnancy. Hardships she faced during the pregnancy in finding an auto rickshaw on her trip back from a banking coaching centre at Kacherippady prompted her to step into the uncharted waters of mobile app development. Long waits for autorickshaws after alighting at a bus stop near her home at Mundamveli near Thoppumpady became far too frequent, Sheeba decided that none in her condition should be left stranded.

So after her coaching sessions and household chores, she set out learning to create apps on the Android platform with the help of e-books and online guidance.

As the app took shape, she registered with Google as a developer with the name The Codes and published the app on Play Store. She even put out two newspaper advertisements to collect contact numbers of autorickshaw drivers.

“More than 75 per cent of the 400-odd numbers in the offline app were registered by the autorickshaw drivers themselves while friends and relatives contributed the rest. Since its formation, the app has been upgraded several times to add numbers and to resolve compatibility issues with different smart phones,” Sheeba said.

The app features at least a few contact numbers listed by important points in every district except Kasargod and Idukki districts. Autorickshaw drivers from 30-odd locations in Ernakulam could be contacted through the app, which also facilitates contacting highway police and delivery of pre-typed SMS on emergencies through the click of a button.
