Renowned filmmaker Kamal recently drew a lot of flak for criticising the Supreme Court order on national anthem in theatres. In fact a section of fundamentalists dug out his original name Kamaludheen Mohammad Majeed to cast aspersions on his religious identity. Kamal is known by his name right from his formative years as a director. It might have been a matter of convenience for him to opt for a smaller name. As he came under vituperative attacks well known poet Rafeeq Ahamed had remarked that it was good that famous actor Prem Nazeer is no more, else people would have mocked him calling his original name Chirayinkeezh Abdul Khader. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, young director Ashiq Abu etc also supported Kamal in the matter.
In this context it will be worth remembering that top Malayalam actors Mammootty and Dileep too should be concerned about their identity. Because as is well known, Mammootty’s real name is Mohammed Kutty, while Dileep’s original name is Gopalakrishnan.
Another legend of Malayalam cinema Kunhalu Kochu Moitheen was well known as Bahadur. In these increasingly conservative times religious identities and names are coming under scanner of communally poisoned people.
