It might seem unbelievable now to think that there was a time when megastar Mammootty was once considered unworthy of payment by producers. During the formative years of his storied career after he made his debut with ‘Vilkkanundu Swapnangal’ (1980), he hit a trough. By mid 80’s his films began to tank one after another. In an interview recently, Mammootty recalled the struggling period of mid 80’s as painful as producers recommended directors to change Mammootty as the lead actor and they even said they won’t pay salary to Mammootty as he doesn’t have market value. Mammootty also said that the same producers were happy for his success post ‘New Delhi’. It was also reported that Mammootty was under severe pressure to deliver a hit as almost every producer deserted him. Luckily for the Mega Star, ‘New Delhi’ rescued him and created a name for him in Tamil Nadu as well.
