1. Paleri Manikyam
A murder mystery, written and directed by Ranjith starring Mammootty, Shwetha Menon, and Mythili, ‘Paleri Manikyam’ was based on a bestselling Malayalam novel of the same name by T. P. Rajeevan which said the true story of the first recorded murder case in Kerala. Mammooty plays three characters in the film. Mammootty won his fifth Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor.
2. Ponthan Mada
Ponthan Mada is a 1994 film written and directed by T. V. Chandran. The film stars Mammootty and Naseeruddin Shah. Set in the 1940s British India, the film is about the extraordinary, uncanny and touching bonding of the so-called low-caste Ponthan Mada (Mammootty) with his colonial landlord Sheema Thampuran (Naseeruddin Shah), who was expelled to British India from England during his youth for supporting the Irish Republican Army. The communication through Thampuran’s window with Mada hanging from a palm tree. Mammootty won the National Film Award for Best Actor.
Pathemari is a period drama film written and directed by Salim Ahamed and starring Mammootty in the lead role. The plot follows the life of Pallikkal Narayanan (Mammootty) who migrated to the Middle-East in the early 1960s, when the Kerala Gulf boom was just beginning. Pathemari was selected for the Indiwood Panorama Competition section at the 2nd edition of Indiwood Carnival 2016 in Hyderabad.
A family drama directed by IV Sasi and written by MT Vasudevan Nair; starring Mammootty, Seema, Mohanlal, Balan K Nair, Vincent and Rahman in the main roles. Mammootty plays Karunan, an arrogant fisherman who returns to his village after serving five years in jail. Mammootty received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor.
‘Aavanazhi’ was a huge hit at the box office. Mammootty appears in the lead role of Balram, a police inspector. This film deals with social and political issues of that time. The big success of Aavanazhi led to its sequels ‘Inspector Balram’ and Balram vs. Taradas. The film, which had a stellar star cast, ran for over 200 days.
Mathilukal is a 1990 film written, directed and produced by Adoor Gopalakrishnan based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. The film focusses on the prison life of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer and the love between him and Narayani, a female inmate of the prison, who remains unseen throughout the film. Mammootty plays the role of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer while K. P. A. C. Lalitha gives voice to Narayani. Mammootty received the National Film Award for Best Actor.
7. The King
A yesteryear classic, ‘The King’ is a political thriller film directed by Shaji Kailas and written by Renji Panicker with Mammootty in the lead role as the district collector Joseph Alex. It was the highest grossing film in the year 1995 which ran in theaters for 200 days.
